The interest in the definition of interoperability services, on the terms used in the health sector, comes from experience. In the past there have been several attempts to solve the problem of heterogeneity of terminologies, through the imposition of a common terminology and a common repository, but the limitations of this approach have been achieved very quickly (intrusiveness, barriers to adoption).

Currently the universally accepted approach is to separate the content - the terminology used – from the functions that manage it, whose standardization is more feasible, although technically more difficult. The overall objective of the CTS2 specific service is to provide a standard support for the management, use and mapping of terminologies in healthcare.

The CTS2 services are presented by the SFM organized in several functional areas:

Administration

Import / export, activation / deactivation, removal of terminologies

Read / Query

Access and search on the basis of the restriction policies;

Authoring/Maintenance

Insert, edit or remove terms and associations;

Association

Functions to create correspondences between terms and their attributes both within a terminology both between two different terminologies;

Mapping

Functions to describe terminology how it relates to another;

Temporal

Query feature that take into account the time and can therefore evaluate the research based on different versions of a terminology

The PIM specification of CTS2 are compiled by HL7 while those at PSM are managed by OMG for the WS * platform and by Mayo Clinic for the REST platform. In the Healtsoaf context will be implemented the Read, Query and Mapping interfaces on the REST platform while it will be set up the infrastructure to implement the other aspects based on future market needs.
